I've been -and still is- a keen tramper. What has changed is that I'm no longer a keen tramper only.
All my life I have avoided any kind of running. Absolutely despised running. The feeling. The sweat. The panting. The sore muscles... I could go on.
Some months ago, I received a scholarship to join Outward Bound for a 8day course. Fantastic!! I soon learned, though, that this course required me to be able to run 3km in 25min. Horror!!!
I did consider to chicken out, but receiving a spot on the course and then discard it?? No I couldn't do that.
There was no other way out than putting on my worn out running shoes (used for walking) and get into it. Yikes!
I started off gently and it was -as expected- dreadful, but kept on doing it: Intervals of jogging and walking. Sweat and stuffed breathing.
What made me continue was an app on my iphone: iMapMyRun. It logs every 'run', gives me an exact distance, time, calories burned (this can be very motivating!), pace, climbs etc. I can compete with myself, and I have a growing list of all my trips, so I can browse through it and be proud of myself actually doing it.
Some days ago I rewarded myself with a new pair of running shoes. Yesterday I went for a run: 9km in 1hr. I can do it! And to my surprise: I love it!!!
What has really helped me is
1. a defined goal to work towards (3 km in 25mins within three months)
2. means to measure myself = providing facts why being proud of myself
3. maybe most importantly: commit to a goal you can't bail out of!!
I hope this could be of inspiration to any of you wanting to get into walking/ running/ losing weight or doing something that you basically don't feel like doing...
Never in my life had I thought that I would consider myself a runner, but now I do. And I'm very proud of it :)
