WALK: Paihia to Opua Coastal Walk

A pretty, well-maintained coastal track from Paihia to the car ferry at Opua, offering beautiful views of the bay, sea birds and a passing vista of sea craft. In summer you may like to take a picnic lunch and enjoy a swim on the way. You can organise return transport by taxi or tuk tuk.

Begin at the visitor centre on the waterfront in Paihia. Face the sea and turn right past the maritime centre. Just past the public toilets on your left you will come to Flagstaff Hill, a good viewpoint over the town and the bay.

I walked this yesterday, we left our car at the Opua end and walked according to our allowed time. We walked for just over an hour and returned - thought this was easier than going the whole way and then having to organise transport back. Next time we'll do the reverse from the Paihia end. This is a gorgeous walk. It has been well maintained over this very wet winter. The track was obviously compromised in a couple of places, due to slips, but has been repaired. The seats installed along the way are great to catch the views. During our 2.5 hour walk we passed, or were passed by, about 15 other walkers - pretty good I reckon for the middle of winter!
