BLOG: The Latest Craze.

There is a new craze in town, the Skechers Shape-Ups walking shoes.

Here's what they say. " Shape Up Walking Shoes are designed to stimulate more muscles and balance with a rocker sole with a soft kinetic wedge. The rocker sole enhances the natural walking motion of rolling through a step from heel to toe. The sole is designed in three layers with a firm midsole for support and a super soft foam kinetic wedge that absorbs shock with each step and simulates walking in soft sand. This combination seeks to activate more muscles to develop balance and posture and tone leg and buttock muscles."

I was in a sports shop tha other day and talking to the shop assistant as i watched woman after woman come into enquire about these shoes.

He told me they had had them in stock for a few months and only sold a couple of pairs and then suddenly when the TV ads started popping up in the Coronation St ad breaks with the by line...weight loss they couldn't keep up with demand... Read the full text of this blog entry.

I have also been looking at these shoes. I have tried them on and had a walk around the shop, and they certainly give you a different walking stance, and action. I bought a pair of sandals last autumn from Avon, and they have the same action as these shoes. I did my usual 6km walk in them, and my calf muscles certainly got a work out as did my glutes. In Briscoes this week I saw anyother brand of these shoes, and they were cheaper than scetchers. In Smiths sports shoes, I asked if they knew anything about them, and the assistant told me that their podiatrist and the shop staff have talked about getting them, and were advised by the podiatrist not to. So they don't stock them. I too am really interested to hear any comments.

I am tempted to - why did the podiatrist say not to wear them?

I am hoping to get some of these shoes for some giveaways. I trialled a pair for a week or so and then slipped a disc in my back. Wasn't the shoes although can't fathom how I did it.

Perhaps it had something to do with stacking 5 cubic metres of wet firewood ?

Anyway getting back on track and being very careful with posture and lifting etc.It is amazing how we take our health and well being for granted sometimes and then we hear stories from others as to how demoralising having long term injuries or illnesses can be.

So to everyone who is struggling out there I hope you find some support from all the kind women on this Forum .it is so uplifting to read all the advice/info and genuine kindness from women from all walks of life and ages and stages.

Given that I live in a household where a "grunt" is the most common from of communication unless they want something it is reassuring to come online and share some female company.

Last day of school today so i better brush up my grunting skills so i can understand the males in our house.

Hi Trina, I didn't get a very good feedback from the sales assistant as to why the podiatrist wasn't in favour of the sketchers shape ups. I have also realised as I read back over what I have previously written that I said they were cheaper in Briscoes (DUH)!!! they don't have shoes eh. I meant Rebel Sports. You should all go into a shop and try them on. They make you feel like you're walking on a cloud, and are very comfortable. I am still very very tempted to buy some. The advertising on them says that they give your legs a similar workout to that of walking on the soft sand on the beach. That is really good for you eh.

I think the shop assistant should have told you why the podiatrist didn't recommend them. They need to back up the statements with some facts and info. If they are comfortable and light and give you a good work out then why not give them a go,. Soft sand on the beach is great too, no wonder we had good strong legs as kids ambogirl. All those sandunes to play on when ever we wanted!

You are so right. Those were the days eh. Have you tried to walk on the beach (soft sand) let alone up the sand hills lately. Man that really is a work out. Gosh we used to run up and down them. If anyone lives near the beach, they are so lucky to have that natural workout at their back door.

Can you walk/run in them fo you think? I am really undecided whether to get them or not - maybe for now I should focus on loosing some weight and then look to tone up when you will actually be able to see the muscles...
Or maybe when I have lost 5kg I can treat myself.....decisions.....decisions

Hi everyone. I have just Googled "Sketchers", and had a quick look at the dozens of sites. I must have a decent look, but it is all very interesting. Trina, I have some sandals which I bought from Avon about a year ago,( they are the same concept), and I find them really comfy to walk in, and I fiind I unconsciously stand straighter. Not sure about running in them though. The actual shoes may be different. Also when I was glancing at the Sketchers sites, it seems that there are several different brands and types. Hope this helps a bit. Cheers everyone. Hope you are all keeping warm. It was minus 6 here in Mosgiel this morning, but up Central it's even colder at minus 13 I believe. Brrrrrrrrrr

Running along the beach was great. I used to love running the length of the beach and as I ran I tried to break a shell without disrupting my steps! Then I remembered Arthur Lydiard in how he trained his squads in running up & down sand dunes - thought I try it - boy - how they did it I don't know., but it was good fun trying!!. And have you seen the All Blacks training on the sand back & forward! & just collapsing at the end -

Way to go who needs gyms and fancy training gear. I know what you are gong through with the shoe thing though. It is such a big outlay to find you don't like them or they don;'t suit. No easy answer there.
Monday again tomorrow. Hope all you mums can have some me time tomorrow and relax a bit after the holidays.
Enjoy your week
