here is a basic outline of converting steps to Kms.
Published guidelines suggest that 10000 steps of concentrated walking per day is beneficial. Health officials have said that at this level of activity per day most people could lose excess weight, improve their fitness and reduce the risk of many lifestyle related diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
So how far is 10000 steps? –Well- note that this will be different for people (depending on your stride etc )–but basically plus or minus a bit, it works out at 5 miles or approx 8 kilometres. So 2000 steps equals 1 mile (1.6 km’s), 4000 equals 2 miles (3.2km’s), 6000 equals 3 miles (4.8km’s) and 8000 equals 4 miles (6.4km’s). The best way to get this equation right for you is to use a good pedometer, which measures steps and distance.We’re all different .
Most people are at different levels –some about the recommended level, some below, some above – If people are below – then it is suggested that a good goal is to increase average steps by 500 a day until the 10000 goal is reached. However this will be different for everyone depending on age –health matters etc. It is recommended that if you are not at the recommended level you talk with your Doctor about what’s good for you to look to achieve and how best to do it! Getting fitter has to take account of your current health and other factors like time etc.Most important is to be realistic about goal setting and have regard to what’s right for you.
