WALK: Mangemangeroa Reserve - Howick

One of the fourteen Premier Parks in Manukau City, described as an area of 'dramatic estuarine landscape at the edge of the urban area'. The flora found in the Reserve represents a variety of podocarp and coastal forest not easily viewed elsewhere in the suburban Auckland region.

Experience the stunning boardwalk tracks along the estuary edge. Walk is from Somerville Road to Sandspit. You return the way you came. Walk can be muddy in low lying areas where it crosses farmland. Board walks and bridges cover wet areas and around the edge of tidal flats. Footwear suitable for rough ground recommended. The route from Somerville Road downstream to Sandspit Road offers a large variety of rural, coastal forest and tidal landscapes.

Mangemangeroa Reserve has a wide variety of native birds and is a walk that is steeped in Maori and early European history. Around the trig site are remnants of a fortified Maori site, and information about the use of the ridge as a traditional bird hunting area. The remains of Maori middens are also marked. This is a gorgeous walk and when I stay with my friend in Howick ..this is always on the agenda.
It does state 3 hours but you can easily shorten that with a number of exits en route.
it's up and down so you get get that heart rate up if you want to. This is a little oasis in what is now a busy Auckland suburb.
