Hi,
A little while ago, I decided to 'walk the length of New Zealand'. I'm finding it's a great motivator, especially on those mornings when I'd really rather just stay in bed. Having not walked for about 3 years due to foot injuries, it's slow progress - in fact, it'll take me about 2-1/2 years at my current training distance, but that's quite okay. I'd highly recommend one of the walk challenges for anyone who's been a bit of a couch potato, and wants to get going again.

Hi - I'm just a newie on this site. Enjoying it immensely. Have run the Rororua & Hastings Marathon. (a 4hr.15mins timewise runner) yonks ago and countless unofficial & official 1/2's. (only 1.50mins was my best & trying to break the 2hrs. for most of them).Did these while belonging to the Hutt Marathon Clinic, where we ran in groups., although I did do the Hastings Marathon by myself.(Found running in groups was a great way to go or with a friend. Had to give running up as had a hip replacement in 2001, so took cycling up more seriously and cycled round Lake Taupo Challenge & entered the relays. All good fun. Then it was down to cycle tours in New South Wales (9days) on my rode bike with my husband and daughter (not to forget 800 other cyclists! - Boy did I get to know how to handle the gears on those tours. Hills (Blue Mountains & The Great Dividing Range - even tho the coaches took our gear etc and dropped us 1/2 way down the other side for the start. All downhill - 'as if'. Have done approx. 3 over there and 1 over here. The last cycling tour in NZ was down South (14days) which we did with 6 others from our small cycling group in NZ. Mind you I couldn't look at my bike for about a month afterwards! But I did get fit! (Found walking did help my cycling - got my calf muscles working)
Now I'm retired Jan 2010 (nearer 70yrs than 60yrs) and decided to walk one day and cycle the next. Of course I needed a challenge - so entered the length of NZ. I did do the 1/2 marathon walk in Taupo 2006 with friends, so was quite pleased at that 31/2hrs.(not fast - well it was raining but I'm not a serious walker in other words. But have no ambition to walk a full one, so this is why I'm doing the length of NZ. in my own time. Will take me a while like you Yvonne. So what I'm thinking of doing is do small challenges like - Waikanae Kapiti Coast (where I live) to Palmerston North: and from Waikanae-Wanganui; maybe Waikane-Taupo etc, and all those will be added to my big one - will motivate me and will stop me from thinking of all those 2,000 odd km's to go. Walking 5km every 2nd day - so far have done 17kms!! The longest on a Sunday is 12km. Sould put my pedometer on my hip when I cycle the odd days.!! One way of getting fit - So don't worry Yonne B. I'll hng in there with you if you can!

Hi folks - I'm doing the "Walk NZ" challenge at the moment, and I was surprised to discover when I logged my walk to and from work yesterday that I'm getting near 450km (somewhere near Auckland now!) since I started the challenge back in November.
Man, those distances add up when you're training regularly!

Hullo Starfire - WOW! its certainly amazing what one can do eh! If you are at Auckland - its only another 595km to Waikanae here. When you get there - say hi to me!! Hey - Is there anymore out there that are near Waikanae here on the Kapiti Coast - also love you to say hi!!. Lovely day here today but breezey. Walked along the beach today - gentle swell - lots of seagulls (must be over 100!) out beyond in a group - must be a pile of herrings being chased by Kahawai (Fish spelling)! We've got a family Reunion Queens Birthday Weekend in Taupo (early June) wonder if I have walked to Taupo by then...(from Waikanae - Taupo its 325kms ) -umm..umm..
