WALK: Te Mata Trust Park – Peak Trail /Te Mata Loop Walk

The walks that converge at the entrance car park are strongly recommended; they pass through forest covering steep limestone to places of great beauty. (Refer to Notice Boards and Te Mata Trust Park brochure).

The Peak Trail follows the red markers and leaves from the left of the road heading uphill along the ridge above the bluffs. The steep track leads to panoramic views from the summit trig (399m). The track descends with fine views south up the Tukituki Valley to Kahuranaki (646m). The finish of the track is at the Redwood Grove (40mins), from where the Te Mata Walk starts (blue markers). Walk up the Te Hau Valley (10mins) climbing left through the bluffs of Fanworth Ridge. This leads to the next gully climbing to the car park (30mins).
The major viewpoint of the area is Te Mata Peak accessible on foot and by road.

Te Mata is "my playground" Whislt it can seem daunting I love the peak as no 2 paths are the same, and most of the paths intertwine.. I love the gentleness of Chamers walk, in contrast the rockface on the ridge between the summit and Redwoods is a great challenge.

Most of the peak walkways are sutible for young familes :)

Several carparks are withen the park, and being a popular park with visitors I have no trouble leaving my car parked up for hours at a time

Hi, any Hawkes Bay girls wanting to get together to walk the Te Mata peak (or anywhere else around HB). I want a walking buddy . 47yrs old female. No kids or hubby at home and can walk during and outside of normal working hours. Wanting to loose weight and get fit. Average speed walker. If some-one is faster than me I would like to be pushed to go faster. If some-one is slower than me I could do loops (race ahead and double back to walk together awhile then race ahead a bit and so on). I am 5ft 10 so have biggish stride.
