wai Valley and the Royal Standard Goldmine area starts at the end of Parkiwai Quarry Road, two kilometres south of the Wentworth Valley. The walk is south of Whangamata about 6.5kms from town. Immediately after crossing the Otahu river bridge, turn right into a narrow road. 3-4kms later, there is a small parking area.- Description
- A track along an old horse-drawn tram track passes unusual andesitic rock formations and leads to waterfalls, swimming holes and old mine workings.The walking track follows the river upstream on the right bank; the entrance is up and over a small bank at the end of the grassed area. After this, the track follows mostly along the line of the old horse tram track, about 1 hour later you join onto a bulldozed track. After crossing Adams creek, the track divides. The dozer track up to the right goes to the top of the ridge, while ahead to the left tracks lead to the battery site, the cataract and old mine shafts.
