Tari Rd to Hicks Rd – Maungatautari Scenic Reserve
- Location
- The entrance to the southern enclosure is at the end of Tari Road, at Pukeatua. Tari Road is directly opposite Pukeatua School. Parking is approximately 100 metres from the enclosure entrance. The main track to Pukeatua peak is clearly marked on your left – about 10 minutes from the car park.
- Description
There are now two tracks, both signposted, ingeniously named the new track and the old track. The new track is wider with an easier camber and is at present being metalled – until it is completed some sections of the path will be slippery when wet. There is a 20-minute scramble to the peak at the end of the new track. Those following the old path have two sections to scramble over tree roots and rocks – the first to a rocky outcrop and the second is to the peak. The view of the Kaimai Range, Pirongia, Pureora Forest Park and Karioi from the top is fabulous – even on a cloudy day! Either track can be taken for those wishing to walk over the mountain to Hicks Road – just remember to organise return transport.
