Hicks Road to Tari Road (Pukeatua) – Maungatautari Scenic Reserve

Location
Park at the end of Hicks Road and walk up to the signposted track beside the farmhouse. Cross the paddock and head directly up the hill to the bush line fence. A stile marks the start of the track. Please note that you do not walk through the northern enclosure to reach Maungatautari peak or to walk across the mountain.
Description

The walk up the hill is gradual, though still steep enough that you would need reasonable fitness (especially if you intend crossing right over to Tari Road). Ten minutes from the top a signposted track turns off on your right; this leads down to Rahiri Road. The last portion to the summit is boardwalked to avoid the mud. The summit itself is surrounded by bush but if you are agile enough to climb to the top of the trig you do get some good views. From this point, you can return the way you came, continue along the ridge to Pukeatua (peak) and Tari Road, or take the Rahiri Road Track. You will need to organise shuttle transport for either of the last two options. Please call Bill and Sue Garland on 07 827 1807 if you wish to use the Rahiri track as the last section is through private property. Note that access is not possible during lambing (from mid August to mid September).
