Description

The trail begins across the river bridge from Rangiriri, on the Waikato's western side. Signage here offers walkers the protection of the taniwha Tarakokomako and names the seven now-vanished ancestral villages, and the two existing marae enroute. There's a stile to take you across the first fence, and the 14-kilometre track opens up. On a clear day, you'll see the orange- topped chimneys of the Huntly Power station standing in the distance. One and a half kilometres in, past Maurea Marae, there is a monument to the Ngati Naho chief, Te Wheoro, whose personal history embodies the extraordinary stresses of colonial rule on Waikato Maori as they argued strategies to preserve tribal identity.

Te Araroa is a continuous walkway from Cape Reinga to Bluff, which is being put in by a small group of private citizens. Any donations to help our work would be most welcome.
