Te Araroa Walkway –Meremere-Rangiriri Trail
- Location
- The 18 km track begins at the end of Dragway Road, Meremere. The Dragway Road turnoff from State Highway is 2.5 kilometres south of the old Meremere Thermal Power Station. Near the end of Dragway Road on the left-hand side, a grassy parking area provides space for four cars.
- Description
An ignimbrite rock marker marks the trailhead, engraved with a Waikato River verse from a Topp Twins song. Signage indicates walkers are under the protection of the Ngati Naho taniwha. The Te Kauwhata Pumphouse is 9.5 kilometres distant, and this Dragway Road- Pumphouse section of the trail is the most scenic. It follows farm tracks and the stop bank for three kilometres before ascending hilly terrain to a height of 35 metres, with good river views, before descending again to the flats. Here kahikatea, cabbage trees and puketea alongside the trail give a hint of the original riverside vegetation.
