Mt Donald McLean walk

- Walking access from the end of Mt Donald McLean Road, which branches off Whatipu Road at the top of the hill above Little Huia.
- Description
An easy graded, metalled walk ascends from parking area and circles to the summit. Viewing platforms give panoramic views of Auckland City, the southern Waitakere Ranges, and Manukau Harbour.
The Mt Donald McLean summit is 390m. On the Huia side of Mt Donald McLean is a large population of carnivorous kauri snail. Trackside plants include: broom, miro, ramarama, mountain flax, totara, toatoa, tanekaha, native passionfruit vine, Alseuosmia macrophylla, koromiko and Corokia buddleioides.
The hills traditional name is Te Rau o Te Huia which is the districts name. It was named Mt Donald McLean after a colonial figure in 1853 that was head of the Native Land Purchase Dept when the Waitakere Ranges were purchased by the crown.
