Tawharanui Regional Park - Ecology Trail
- Location
- From Auckland, head north on the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) to Warkworth. At the second set of traffic lights, turn right and follow the signs to Matakana. After Matakana village, turn right at the Omaha intersection, head along Takatu Road and follow the signs to the Park.
- Description
Follow the yellow markers. The walk starts at The Hut at Anchor Bay and passes through coastal wilderness, pasture and native bush.

closes: 7pm (winter) and 9pm (summer)Tawharanui is also an Open Sanctuary where native plants and animals can live and breed successfully without the threat of predators. Tawharanui is home to the Kereru, Kaka and Bellbird. Brown kiwi, robin, whitehead, and forest and green geckos were reintroduced to Tawharanui. Future reintroduction plans include pateke, kakariki, and threatened plants.
Panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf, Kawau and Little Barrier islands are visible from around the park. There are also rolling dunes and grasslands, rippling streams, beautiful coastal forest, stunning wetlands, and acres of farm, complemented by a breathtaking coastline and surf beach. Part of the coast is now a Marine Park.
