Cascade walkway - Howick

Location
The walkway can be entered off Pakuranga road or Cascades road.
Description

The Cascade Walkway passes the Howick Historical Village, sporting facilities of Lloyd Elsmore Park, Millhouse and Meadowlands Reserves. It offers opportunities to bird watch, jog, walk or explore. Sturdy footwear is recommended for some unpaved areas during wet weather.

You cross the Hattaway bridge on your walk. This was constructed of stone and wood forming a link with the area’s rich colonial history. Scoria paving stones near the bridge are the remains of an old coach road once leading to the Cascade Farm, owned by Captain Robert Hattaway in the 1860s. The viewing platform provides you a view over the Cascade waterfall, where Botany Creek empties into a sheltered tidal amphitheatre.

Many of the large trees along the walkway are part of the legacy of the Hattaway’s 19th century settlement. Oak trees by Lochend Place are over a hundred years old. Parts of the walkway are gradually being regenerated and many of the established native trees and shrubs have been planted by local school children.

The Cascade Walkway runs next to the Howick Historical Village, where you can experience life in Howick back in the 1800s. Buildings from 1840- 1880 are nestled among old fashioned gardens. The village is brought to life by historical interpreters dressed in period costume. Opening hours are 10am-4pm during winter and 10am – 5pm in summer, seven days a week. You can picnic or dine at the Homestead Café.

There are four playgrounds on this walkway. One is off Gosford Drive, set on a large open grassed area with pine trees in the background. There are also three playgrounds within the vicinity of Lloyd Elsmore Park, the equal access playground opposite the swimming complex, Nanbells playground on Ladymarie Drive, and the award wining Ellerslie Flower Show Children’s Heritage Park adjacent to the Howick Historical Village. At both ends of the Cascade Walkway are sporting facilities. Lloyd Elsmore Park offers cricket, rugby and soccer grounds, tennis courts and a swimming pool complex. The Millhouse and Meadowlands Reserves also have excellent sporting facilities.
