Kauri Park

Location
The main entrance from Rangatira Road leads to the start of the loop track.
Description

The main entrance from Rangatira Road leads to the start of the loop track. To the left, the main kauri grove is only five minutes walk away. The trees are between 200 and 400 years old.

The track continues to a lookout point at the end of a bluff which then curves around, passing a tawa and a beech growing closely together. A bridge across the stream takes you past tree fuchsia and ponga. Either turn right and cross the stream again to the base of the massive kahikatea, the steps then lead back up to the start of the kauri grove, or take a left turn and soon a second track loops to the right through an area of regenerating tanekaha and kauri amongst the kanuka.

By missing this second right turn and keeping to the left, the track follows the main stream through the valley filled with ponga, nikau, puriri, kohekohe, rata and kiekie. At the end of the valley a left fork leads across the stream and up to Hebe Place whereas the right fork circles back through to the main entrance again.

This park is noted for seasonal changes in its rich mix of ferns and flowering species, including native orchids.
