Mangapohue Walk
- Location
- This scenic route through Waitomo's limestone landscape takes you from the SH 3/Waitomo turn-off across to the historic west coast fishing settlement of Marokopa. From there, it is a further 5 km south down the coast to Kiritehere. Situated 5 km past the Appletree Road turnoff (25 km from Waitomo Village).
- Description
- The Mangapohue Natural Bridge – a spectacular 17 metres high limestone arch spanning Mangapohue Stream – is all that remains of an ancient cave system. This loop track is mainly boardwalk to start. Steps take you to a viewing area above the first tier of the bridge. You pass under an arch, giving a view of the ceiling studded with stalactite-like formations and an excellent view back down the gorge. It then continues over a farm trail, with 30 million year old fossilised oysters exposed in limestone outcrops.
