Pakiri Beach Track

Location
90 minutes north of Auckland. Start from the Goat Island Marine Reserve.Visitors should park in the reserve car park and proceed west along Goat Island Beach at low tide. The track may become impassable at high water. The track may be walked in reverse from the Pakiri Beach Accessway south to Goat Island.
Description

Pakiri Beach is a 9 km long beach.

About 1.5 km along Goat Island Beach around the first headland, you come to Pink Beach. This has pale pink sand derived from the shells of small animals called brachiopods. There is a waterfall. Continue for another half kilometre, past the western boundary of the reserve at Okarikari Point and the southern end of the 9km sweep of Pakiri Beach appears. You can then return to the start or continue up Pakiri Beach to the new ARC Regional Park and the camping ground. The Auckland Regional Authority has recently purchased the majority of the coastal land (~3 km) at the southern end of Pakiri Beach for ~20 million dollars. This is a more difficult walk along the high water mark, across loose boulders at times and you need to be fit with stout footwear, sun protection, water and food. Allow a whole day, and exercise care swimming, as the sea is dangerous here.
