Onehunga Heritage Walk - Manukau Walk

- The walk commences at 2 Spring Street – The Pump house where underground spring still supply the Onehunga residents with water.
- Description
From Spring Street turn left into Princes Street, right into Alfred Street and follow Alfred Street until you reach Neilson Street and the Waikaraka Park – 175 Neilson Street. This was once the home of horse racing around 1893 and now used for stock car racing.
Walk back to 1 Alfred Street – Waikaraka Cemetery. The first burial was here in 1890. The burial ground has large areas of Returned Servicemen and the Sisters of Mercy. From Alfred Street turn right into Grotto Street. The grotto is sunken lava flow formed in a period of volcanic activity from Maungakiekie. At 4, 6, 12, 14 Grotto Street are fine examples of early villas built by William and Thomas Kemp between 1885 and 1897. Walk back along Grotto Street turn right into Alfred Street and then left into Grey Street. 177 Grey Street is NZ Industries. This was built in 1887 by the Kemp brothers. This home has the coat of arms over the bay window and is described as being that of ‘NZ Industries.’
Walk to Mays Road. At 16 Mays Road is Emerald Hill a villa built by the Kemp brothers. Leave Mays Road and walk to 111 Victoria Street a Double Unit Fencible Cottage. The only genuine survivor left in Onehunga.
At 38 Alfred Street is the railway memorabilia museum. It was once the Railway Station Building.
