Motukaraka Island

Located at Beachlands.
From the Airport drive to Howick and then to Whitford. Drive past the Formosa golf course. Take the next left and frive to the end veering right at the curved intersection. This will take you through the township of Beachlands. At the end of the shops turn left into Second View Avenue. Drive to the end where you turn right at a t-junction. Drive to the end where you will see a reserve on the left with limited parking. At the end of the reserve are some steps from the corner of Hawke Crescent and Puriri Road, which take you down to the beach/sandspit. If mid tide, you may have to ford some shallow rockpools.
- Description
- Motukaraka Island, nicknamed Flat Island was once a Maori pa (fortified village). At low tide its an easy walk to the island on a 200m long sandbank which connects Beachlands, a north eastern suburb of Auckland, with the island. Steps lead to the top of the island.
