Mt Albert

Location
Mt Albert is accessed from Summit Drive, off Mt Albert Road.
Description

Mt Albert is also known in Maori as Owairaka (‘the drinking water of Rakataura’) and Te Ahi Ka a Raka (‘the long burning fire of Rakataura’), to the mountain and its environs.

Mt Albert was once a large scoria cone, but extensive quarrying has meant that much of the top of the mountain has been removed. The floors of the quarries are now used for playing fields after being replanted with grass around the top of the mountain. The cone is planted with native as well as exotic trees. Trees on the outer edge of the cone are mainly puriri and pohutukawa. Near the playing fields are flowering cherry, gums, poplar, willow, olive, coral tree, silky oak and coast banksia.

The Active Mt Albert brochure can be obtained at community centres, libraries and by phoning Auckland City on (09) 379 2020.
