Kauri Point Centennial Park

Location

There are three main entrances to Kauri Point Centennial Park, Onetaunga Road:

Upper Onetaunga entrance: opposite Bragatto Place. A well developed loop track through bush with a secondary track to Western Headland. It links the main track to Kendall Bay. ·

Main Onetaunga entrance: opposite Chelsea View Drive. An all-weather track leads from the noticeboard down to Kendall Bay (Rongohau) and then on up to the Western Headland lookout. A dry weather track follows the clifftop to Chelsea sugar refinery.

Lower Onetaunga entrance: opposite David Beattie Place. A good shingled track which links with the main track and the walk down to Kendall Bay and the lookout, and also with the dry weather clifftop track to Chelsea sugar refinery.

Description
Kauri Point Centennial Park is accessible off Onetaunga Road, and has walks that take you to the tranquil beach of Kendall Bay. Several lookouts afford good views of the harbour. Here is the only remaining example of a fortified pa on Waitemata Harbour. Some of the land was originally owned by Sir John Logan Campbell. Much of the land was taken for harbour and defence purposes earlier this century. In 1987, 22 hectares were purchased from the Harbour Board to form the present park. Wetlands and regenerating native bush are a feature.
