Historic Warkworth

Description

Begin the historic Warkworth walk from Kowhai Park, on the northern edge of the town. The walk is signposted and leads past the remains of the lime kilns that were in operation in the 1880s. Walk past the courthouse in Elizabeth Street and Bridge House. Cross the old bridge over the falls. Take the ‘Nathaniel Wilson Steps’ to the River walk, this begins at the weir on the site of Brown’s Flour Mill Dam. The walk takes you beside the Mahurangi River to the site of the former Warkworth Wharf.

Walk up Kapanui Street to Mill Street. Stubb’s Family Butchery and one of the town’s oldest shops (now ASB) and the Warkworth Inn once stood here. From Mill Street proceed to Baxter Street and the Masonic Lodge.

At the eastern end of Baxter Street is Lucy Moore Park which offers views over the Mahurangi River and short walks.

From Baxter Street turn into Neville Street. At ‘Robert’s Corner’ is the old Hinemoa Boardinghouse and ‘Broomfield House’. Further South along Neville Street are the BNZ bank, Post Office and Town Hall. The Methodist church is at the southern end of Neville Street in an area known as ‘Church Hill’. They include the Band Hall, Band Rotunda and War Memorial, Christ Church, old cemetery, St Columba Church.

The Puhinui Scenic Reserve is on the north side of the Mahurangi River. The regenerating forest is home to totara, kanuka, kowhai, mamaku tree ferns, tanekaha and kauri. Mangroves grow on the southern shore.
