Fox Glacier, Nimble Fox

Location

The Fox Glacier township is a small country township located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Walks commence from the carpark on Glacier Access Road.

Description

Fox Glacier is approximately 3km longer than Franz Josef. Both glaciers take about an hour to walk on to. In Fox Glacier access is along the river valley floor and then through a secret track through a rainforest up the side of the glacier. Fox Glacier is located in a mountainous area and therefore is subjected to great variations in its weather patterns. The temperature can vary between 0-25 degrees celsius, and the West Coast is notorious for its wild wet weather, hence its magnificent rainforests! Weather and cloud levels can change within a matter of minutes.

On the Nimble Fox all day walk it takes one hour to access the ice. Then you venture further up the glacier to an area where the glacier is moving up to 2 metres a day and majestic pinnacles and deep crevasses occur.
