Hump Ridge Track
- Location
This circuit track starts from Bluecliffs Beach (south west of Tuatapere) at the Rarakau Farm carpark.Travel to Tuatapere on SH99 to the south western district. From Tuatapere turn on to PapatÅtara Road and follow the signs to Bluecliffs Beach. The first 21km are sealed and the remaining 7km are gravel road of a good standard. Cars can be left in the carpark (at the owner's risk), signposted in front of the Rarakau Station homestead, 150 metres past the track entrance.
The Hump Ridge Track can be combined with the South Coast Track as a round trip. The South Coast Track starts with the Bluecliffs to Wairaurahiri via Port Craig section (an easy tramping track) which leads to Wairaurahiri and Waitutu River track (a tramping track). This connects to the more challenging Waitutu River to Big River route. You can also get to the South Coast Track via the Teal Bay Route
- Description
Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track has all the qualities of a great walk. The track winds across some of New Zealand's wildest land, leading trampers through parts of Fiordland National Park, along an alpine ridge, through forest, across Maori land and along deserted beaches of the south coast of the South Island. The very existence of the track is something quite special, a reflection of Kiwis love for tramping and the 'can do' attitude of a small rural community. This track was conceived by the local community and then built with the same pioneering spirit and hard work that built the timber town of Tuatapere itself.
Day 2 on the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is one of the most glorious single day walks of any New Zealand Great Walk. A day where you will wake up above the bush line among mountain Kea and finish watching Hectors dolphins play in the great Southern Ocean...
Options include the all inclusive Guided Walk, independent Freedom Plus or luxury level Heli Hump with sumptuous meal in a private cabin nearly 1km high!
