Waikato River Trails Grand Opening
Posted on November 05, 2011 at 11:00 AM
There will be a shuttle bus from Whakamaru Reserve (near Whakamaru Dam on the Ongaroto Road) to the Mangakino lake front reserve (toilets and free camping). From there a 14km section of the Waikato River Trail will take walkers/bikers along the new board walks past the wetland below the Mangakino Golf Course then along the Lake Maraetai to the Mangakino Stream, across the stream on the new 60m suspension bridge, through Whakamaru Domain (toilets and free camping), along the Waikato River Gorge to the Whakamaru Dam, across the dam and back to the Whakamaru Reserve.
The Otunui Paddleboat will also be at the lakefront reserve for trips on the lake and the Mangakino Stream. Also in the future for walkers that only wish to walk the trail one way, the Otunui Paddleboat can run a shuttle service down Lake Maraetai to either the Mangakino Stream (to the suspension bridge), along the Waikato River Gorge, or up to the Whakamaru Dam. (6, 8,or 10km).
