Exercise and Mental Health

Mind body exercises such as Tai Chi and yoga are associated with a better body image and fewer eating problems in comparison with more traditional exercises such as jogging.

Dealing with making a major decision or a life change? Try long distance running, hiking or yoga. These activities tend to build a feeling of achievement which increases your feelings of confidence.

Suffering from low self esteem? Feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed? Try something like rock climbing or weight training. These activities increase feelings of strength and confidence.
Feeling anxious or stressed? Try dance or kick boxing. These activities require concentration so tend to calm and distract you from your anxieties. Some people find Tai Chi or yoga useful whilst others find they make them worse and feel more relaxed through more vigorous exercise.
Feeling angry? Try something like swimming or walking. These activities don't require much concentration or decision making, so allow your body to relax fully into the activity leading to increased relaxation. Some people also find activities such as boxing or tennis release pent up anger.

Having problems with your relationship? Need to talk but are too scared to bring it up? Try exercising together as discussions can be easier when they occur alongside activity.
Feeling that you lack social skills and the ability to get on with and trust people? Try a team sport to help you develop these abilities.
Are you a rather tense, agitated person? Try exercising later in the day as a way of working through the day's tensions.
