Scandrett Bay Loop
- Location
- Take State Highway 1 to Warkworth. Follow the signs to Snells Beach. Approximately 3 kilometers east of Algies Bay, turn left into Scandrett Road and follow the road to the end.
- Description
The enormous old Norfolk Pine growing on the beach is a legacy of Sir George Grey, New Zealand's first Governor-General.
The historic Scandrett homestead built in 1885 is made of an early type of concrete, and the associated farm buildings are relics of a bygone era. The land has had a long European farming history, and was the site of early ship-building in the 1850s. The Scandrett family, from whom the park was purchased, farmed the land for 130 years.
Walking tracks at Scandrett are yet to be developed. The walk mentioned is unmarked, but well worth exploring. Leave all gates as you find them as there are cattle and sheep in the park.
Starts at either of the carparks. It includes the Orchard, Stockyard and Pigsty Tracks as well as part of the Mullet Point Track. You will wander through the historic farm precinct, the former orchard and the present farm. For a shorter version, use the Sled Track and the road past the historic farmhouse. A ten-minute detour along the Lookout Track will give you a view overlooking Scandrett Bay.
