These simple steps will help keep your metabolism running hot, your motivation running high, and your eating habits on track.
State the positive. Thoughts are self-fulfilling prophecies. Tell yourself "I can lose weight." "I will get out for my walk today." "I can resist the jet planes and chocolate"
Eat breakfast. Study after study shows that people who lose weight and keep it off eat breakfast every day. Skip this meal and not only do you feel starving by lunchtime, your body thinks it's starving and slows down metabolism to conserve calories.
Keep a food diary for one week. Jotting down everything you eat helps you identify your eating downfalls, keeps you honest, and makes you think twice before pigging out. Remember all the junk food is just comfort food. I know an apple isn't very comforting.
Eat only when you hear your stomach growling. It's stunning how often we eat out of boredom, anxiety, or habit. Next time wait until your stomach is growling. If you're desperate for a specific food, it's probably a craving, not hunger.
Have one less biscuit a day. Or consume one less can of fizzy, or three fewer bites of a fast-food hamburger. Doing any of these saves you about 100 – 200 calories a day, enough to prevent you from gaining the 2 kilos most people pack on each year.
Hang around fit, healthy people. One major study that followed a group of people for more than 30 years found that a person's risk of obesity increased 57 percent if they had a friend who became obese, and 37 percent if their spouse became obese. (If your spouse is overweight, try walking together!)
