Eden Gardens

Location
24 Omana Avenue, Epsom
Description
It has been described as Auckland’s best-kept garden secret. Only a few minutes drive from the bustling street of downtown Auckland, and tucked into the northern slopes of Mt Eden, the five acres that comprise Eden Garden are a magical microcosm of the art and craft of gardening. The garden features one of the largest collections of camellias in the Southern Hemisphere. The plants are diverse in the garden and include vireya rhododendrons, bromeliads, palms, conifers, hostas and native New Zealand plants and trees. Eden Garden was established on a disused quarry in 1964. Under the vision of Jack Clark it has been transformed into a paradise for all to enjoy. Many of the tracks and trails are named after significant Eden Garden Society members who were prominent in the development of the area. The garden is open 365 days a year with a fee of $5 for adults, $3.50 for senior citizens and children enter for free. Wherever one goes plants and landscape structures have memorial plaques, endowed to the gardens by those wanting a significant place to remember a deceased loved one. After 10 years the plaque can be re-endowed or permanently placed on the memorial wall. Opening hrs: 9am–4.30pm daily
