Cheltenham Beach to Takapuna Beach and back

- Take a 12 min ferry ride to Devonport and stroll along King Edward parade turning left into Cheltenham Road and the beach.

- The walk commences at Cheltenham Beach – check tides before planning this walk. Full route passable about 2 ½ hrs either side of low tide.Walk towards the rocks at the northern end of Cheltenham Beach to Takapuna Historic Reserve. Pass under the cliffedge homes in Hamana Street and Seacliffe Avenue. Shortly after the access to Seacliffe Avenue you will find the playing fields of Takapuna Grammar. From here walk to St Leonards beach, a broad expanse of beach that attracts nudists. At St Leonards there is a steep accessway to St Leonards Road, off Lake Road on the northern boundary of Takapuna Grammar. In the rocks between St Leonards and Takapuna Beach you can see fossils of marine animals from about 20 million years ago. Takapuna beach is now visible. You can retrace your steps back to Cheltenham beach or take a bus from Lake Road back to Cheltenham beach.
