Why don't we run away together

Ani sits in the cafe watching butter drip from a blueberry and white chocolate muffin, down the chin of a lithe and lissom 20-year-old.

“Bet she goes home and barfs it up,” Ani thinks uncharitably. “If you eat like that, you don’t look like that.”

Ani’s waiting for Betty and rapidly losing interest in her low-fat fruit slice. If Betty doesn’t hurry and join her, nothing will keep her from the caramel pecan pie with chocolate topping.

Betty bustles in and thuds into the chair opposite Ani.

“Why don’t we run away together?” Betty blurts out.

The pounding of Ani’s heart eclipses the pounds she usually worries about – the ones between her and the table. Is Betty trying to hit on her? Was it the Kegelmaster talk that did it?

“Us? Away together?” she splutters into her coffee.

“Yeah, imagine it,” Betty says. “The wayfaring Wonder Walkers ... why don’t we all make a weekend of it?”

Betty assumes Ani’s face is red with excitement as she listens to her plans for an out-of-town hike and a no men, no kids, no-holds-barred Wonder Walkers road trip.
