Mount Robinson
- Location
- Start at the Loop Track from either of the two well-marked points on Port Underwood Road.
- Description
At 1036 metres above sea level, Mt Robertson (Toko Maru) dominates the Scenic Reserve to which it gives its name. Its easterly position means it offers a good view: south over Blenheim to the Kaikoura mountains, east to the North Island and west (inland) up the Wairau Valley.
To climb Mount Robertson allow most of the day.
The two main arms of this track climb through regenerating and mature forest to meet where the Mount Robertson Track begins, at about 700 metres altitude (the northern arm provides the quickest access to this point (5 hr) – allow an extra 30 min using the southern arm). From here the Mount Robertson Track follows an obvious ridge to the summit through ever-shrinking beech forest. This section takes about two and a half hours.
For a longer trip, with the added reward of starting from sea level, begin your ascent from either Whites Bay or Rarangi using the tracks described above to get to the loop track starting points.
