Marfells Beach / Cape Campbell Route

Location
The turn-off to Marfells Beach is 35 km south of Blenheim via State Highway 1. The beach is a further 8 km down Marfells Beach.
Description

This small coastal reserve has a long history as a public recreation area, starting in 1925 when the Marfell family exchanged land with the Crown for that purpose. The reserve has since been extended and the facilities improved. It is now managed by DOC as a picnic and camping area and has flushing toilets and running water.

An unmarked route follows the beach from the eastern end of the camping area to Cape Campbell, the southernmost extreme of Cook Strait. The striking lighthouse there is the second, built in 1903 to replace the original built in 1870.
