Haast Pass Highway walks
- Location
- These walks are signposted on SH 6 south of Haast on the way to Wanaka and Queenstown.
- Description
Roaring Billy Falls Walk (30 mins)
An easy walk along a track lined with tree fern, passing some fine examples of miro, matai and silver beech trees. The broad gravel bed of the haast River is in contrast to the jumble of huge boulders over which the aptly named Roaring Billy cascades.
Pleasant Flat (5 mins)
A designated site for overnight camping, this area includes a shelter, toilet and walk through beech forest. There are excellent views of Mt Hooker.
Thunder Creek Falls Walk (5 mins)
A walk suitable for wheelchairs, to a view of impressive 28 metre high falls. Like all waterfalls in the haast Valley these are at their best after rainfall.
Fantail Falls Walk (5 mins)
An easy walk to an attractive fan-shaped falls. Note the reduced size of the Haast River here compared with its volume at the Roaring Billy Falls walk.
