Chalet Lookout Track

Location
Drive 2 km south on State Highway 6 from the Fox Glacier township and turn left after crossing the bridge.
Description

The Chalet Lookout Track winds gently up through rata and kamahi forest, along an old glacier access road built in 1937. The track provides good glacier views and passes by a huge boulder, called ‘Bivvy Rock’ typical of the natural shelters used by trampers and climbers. Ten minutes from Bivvy Rock the track climbs more steeply up to a moraine dumped by the glacier in 1750 AD and on to the unbridged Mills Creek.

The historic Chalet Hut site is marked at a clearing two minutes before the Chalet lookout where, less than 100 years ago you could look down at the glacier. As you walk this track keep an eye out for native birds especially fantail, silvereye, grey warbler, tomtit, bellbird, tui, pigeon and kea.
