Okarito walking tracks
- Location
- Drive 15 km north from Franz Josef Township on State Highway 6 to the Okarito turnoff signposted on the left. Drive 13 km along a sealed road to Okarito. The walks begin at the south end of The Strand in Okarito.
- Description
Three Mile Lagoon ( 3 hrs)
The inland route follows a historic pack track, while a 2 hours 40 minutes return coastal walk is slightly quicker.
However, the coastal route should only be attempted within 2 hours either side of low tide. Check the tide times posted at the start of the walk.
The inland route climbs over the Kohuamarua Bluff and meanders through wind-shorn rimu, rata and silver pine forest before dropping down to the lagoon – a quiet sheltered estuary with an old bridge across.Okarito Trig Walk ( 90 mins)
It is a gentle walk to the trig turn-off and then a short but steep climb to some breathtaking views of the Westland National Park.
