Lake Wombat Track
- Location
- Drive or walk south from the Franz Josef township across the Waiho River Bridge and turn left up the Glacier Access Road for 2 kms to where the Lake Wombat walk begins, signposted on the right side of the road.
- Description
- Lake Wombat takes you through luscious green ferns and rimu forest, abundant with bird life, to the Lake Wombat. The track climbs gently from the Franz Josef Glacier Access Road to the lake, formed about 9000 years ago and named after Jack Irwin, alias Wombat Jack who sluiced for gold in the area in the 1800’s.
