Douglas Walk
- Location
- The track entrance is signposted in the main glacier car park, 4.5 km up the glacier access road.
- Description
The Douglas Walk is an easy forest walk that takes you over ancient glacial landforms formed between 1600 AD and 1750 AD. The return walk to the car park is via the glacier access road taking 15 minutes.
The track starts on a river fan covered with 40-year-old shrub forest. Peters Pool viewpoint is about 10 minutes into the walk. Peters Pool is a kettle lake formed by melting buried ice about 1800 AD.
Further on through shrubs and mountain flax is a view of the upper valley. From here the track climbs ancient glacial moraine past stands of young rata and kamahi trees. The track continues on past the Douglas swing bridge access to the Roberts Point Track, continues crossing several older moraines and descending to the bridge across Dolly Creek on the way back to the road.
