Lake Kaniere short walks
- Location
- From Hokitika head east 19 km along Lake Kaniere Road, this road meets the lake at 'The Landing'. The road forks at this point, the right road heads to 'Sunny Bight' and the other is Dorothy Falls Road which takes you around the east side of the lake past Hans Bay.
- Description
Canoe Cove Walk (15 min one way)
Canoe cove is a small inlet at the head of the Lake. From a car park opposite Milltown Road which is 1 km from the Landing along Lake Kaniere Road, this walk leads through dense stands or rimu and kahikatea forest to a sheltered sandy beach suitable for picnics and swimming.
Dorothy Falls (2 mins)
About 3.5 km from Hans Bay along Dorothy Falls Road, a short walk leads to the base of Dorothy Falls – a lovely spot for a refreshing dip.
Beach Walk (5 mins)
Opposite Dorothy Falls another short five minute track takes you to the lake edge.
Kahikatea Forest Walk (10 min return)
Easy 10 minute flat loops walk at Sunny Bight picnic area. The walk follows the Sunny Bight Creek and passes through virgin Kahikatea forest returning to the picnic area via a boardwalk over a flax swamp.
