Arahura & Styx valleys tracks
- Location
The Arahura and Styx valleys are popular areas for tramping. The main access in both valleys is via benched formations constructed during the early gold mining days.
The lower Styx Saddle connects the two valleys allowing straight forward round trips. Access to the Styx Valley is off the Kokatahi/Lake Kaniere circuit road approximately 1 km on the Lake Kaniere side of the mark Wallace Styx River bridge.
- Description
A gateway gives access to the river flats and a very rough 4WD track which terminates below a series of bluffs on the true right bank of the Styx River. From this point, travel is by foot around the base of the bluffs on the true right bank of the Styx River. From this point, travel is by foot around the base of the bluffs to the start of the benched route. Alternative access can be from the Lake Kaniere/Hokitika road via the Milltown Road beginning from the Milltown road bridge across the Arahura River (true right bank) and walking the route in reverse order.
