Lake Christabel tracks
- Location
Access to both valleys is along Palmer Road, which leaves the Lewis Pass Highway at a sharp bend 3 km west of Springs Junction. The road is gravelled but suitable for cars.
Access to the Rough Creek Saddle track can be gained from the Lewis Pass Highway, 10 km east of Springs Junction
- Description
Lake Christabel Track ( 6 – 7 hr)
The track begins about 10 km along Palmer Road, at the Blue Grey River Bridge, and follows the true right bank to the lake. The hut is about 30 minutes past the head of Lake Christabel, on the true left side of the north branch of the Blue Grey River.
Robinson River and Saddle Track (2 days)
From the end of Palmer Road it is 3 hours up the Robinson Valley to the 6 bunk Mid Robinson Hut, with the 8 bunk Top Robinson Hut 3 hours 30 minutes further on. From the Top Robinson Hut it is 3 hours up the left branch via a marked track and snow pole route to the Robinson Saddle, then 3 hours down to Lake Christabel Hut.
Rough Creek Track (5 hr 30 min – 6 hr)
This track is another way into Lake Christabel. The track leads up to the bush line, from where snow poles mark the way through open tussock tops over the Rough Creek Saddle. The poles meet the track down the upper right hand branch of the Blue Grey River above Lake Christabel.
Weather conditions can change rapidly, particularly on the tops. Rain can quickly make even small streams treacherous to cross.
