The website provides a wealth of information on all the 61 North Island peaks on the list, and the first version of the South Island list will be released soon. One of the main goals with this list is to provide motivation to get people into the outdoors. When most New Zealanders think of the 'mountains', they think of the Southern Alps or Ruapehu or Taranaki, but there are many smaller little known summits which make for a great walking destination. You don't need to be super fit to get started on the list, as even small summits like Mt Maunganui and Rangitoto are included for beginners. Peak Bagging is a fun way to get into the outdoors and provides a great motivation for seeking out the less travelled hill and mountain summits of New Zealand.

After you've bagged a few of the peaks, you can record your progress at the www.peakbagging.co.nz website. The site is completely free and has an active forum where other enthusiastic peak baggers share their trip reports and photos – it's a great place to meet other walkers or just dream of your next weekend escape.

As at September 2008, we've bagged 22 peaks on the official PeakBagging.co.nz list. You'll see we are not mega tramping freaks – we just bag a few peaks when time permits. Most of the time we spend living in the Wellington suburbs doing everyday city things. One of the aims of our site is to encourage other city dwellers to try standing on a few summits and just try taking a little time out from life.

So give it a go, and then come and share your experiences with us!
