- Description
The Patea River Walk takes you through many important historic spots. Before you head out, stop at the South Taranaki i-SITE Visitor Centre in Hawera or your nearest library to pick up your free copy of the Historic Patea brochure.
The walk falls into two sections. The first section starts at Durham Street and follows the river to State Highway 3. This section of the walk takes about half an hour each way and apart from the climb to SH3, is flat. It winds through pine trees, past mud flats and has excellent scenery.
The second section starts at York Street and follows the river to Mana Bay. This section is hillier. It takes you through pastureland and pine forest and takes about 40 minutes each way. There's climbing involved too, so be prepared to stop for a rest at the top of the hill. The beach destination makes this a spectacular walk. Take a picnic lunch and make the most of one of the best walkways in the district with its unique history and atmosphere of pine and pasture, river and sea.
