Western Ruahine - Rangiwahia Hut - Deadmans Track

Location
Travel past the villages of Kimbolton and Rangiwahia and continue along Te Para Para Rd and on to Renfrew Road. Follow this to the car park at the end.
Description

The Ruahine Forest Park consists of beautiful bush-covered ranges

Day 1: Car park to Rangiwahia Hut (2 – 3 hr)

A benched track enters the bush beside the car park and begins at a steady grade. The Deadmans Track junction on the right is a few metres in from the car park. A short, steepish 30-40 minute detour track around an active slip is the only section of track that is not uniformly graded. The detour comes out just before a picturesque arched wooden bridge crossing a deep ravine of the Mangahuia Stream. A slightly steeper grade from here, the track heads up through smaller shrub species past a pretty waterfall to reach Rangiwahia Hut.

Spend the night here.

Day 2: Rangiwahia Hut via Deadmans Track to Carpark (5 – 6 hr)

Follow the obvious path up the tussock ridge on to the tops of the Whanahuia Range. Head south to Mangahuia Trig and then return to the car park down Deadmans Track.

Due to travel on the open tops this hike should not be attempted in poor visibility or bad weather.
