North Egmont Easy Tramping Tracks

Location
These tracks are in the Egmont National Park, at North Egmont Roadend approximately a ½ hour drive from New Plymouth. Drive south on State Highway 3 to Egmont Village and turn right onto Egmont Road. North Egmont is at the end of this road.
Description

Ram Track (1hr 30 min – 2 hr one way)
This track leaves near the Camphouse in the upper car park at North Egmont. This track follows a ridgeline above the Ram Stream, descending through alpine forest to the Egmont Road. Near the start is an old concrete reservoir from which a ram pump once supplied water to the Camphouse and the former North Egmont Chalet. On a clear day expect some spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding countryside.

Follow the Veronica Loop Track from the right of the Camphouse until you reach the Ram Track. Turn right and descend to the Kaiauai Track. Turn right to reach Egmont Road 2km below the North Egmont Visitor Centre. Be aware that there are no barriers above the cliffs along the ridgeline. Sections of the track are uneven, muddy and steep.

Ngatoro Track (1hr 30 min – 2 hr one way)
The track begins below the Visitors Centre at North Egmont. This tramp is a good example of how forest changes with altitude. Leaving from the lower car park at North Egmont it descends to the Mangaoraka Picnic Area on the Egmont Road. Expect a few stream crossings and a few muddy patches along the track. Arrange transport to avoid a 4 km walk back up the road. Alternatively, cross the road at the Mangaoraka Picnic Area and follow the Mangaoraka and Waiwhakaiho Tracks to the Ram Track which leads back to the upper car parking area at North Egmont. Allow 2 hours for this section of the walk. NB. The section of Waiwhakaiho Track shown on the Park map down to the Park boundary is no longer maintained.

Veronica Loop (2 hr return)
This track begins in the upper car park at the North Egmont Road End. This track is a good example of how forest changes with altitude. Taking the Holly Hut Track to the left of the Camp house, continue past the Ambury Memorial gradually making your way up numerous stairs passing a few spots where spectacular views can be had of the forest, ring plain and upper slopes of the mountain. Turn right and descend down through montane forest to other viewing spots. Turn right again, and make your way across, returning to the Camp house. A worthwhile side trip will take you to a lookout point on the Holly Hut track, 10 minutes walk past the Veronica Loop sign post. Return down to the sign post to continue the Veronica Loop Track.
