North Egmont Tramping Tracks

These tramps are in the Egmont National Park, at North Egmont Road end approximately a ½ hour drive from New Plymouth. Drive south on State Highway 3 to Egmont Village and turn right onto Egmont Road. North Egmont is at the end of this road.
Description

Maketawa Hut Circuit (3 – 4 hr return)
A scenic tramp that offers bush and coastal views, this tramp can easily be completed in a day – or is a great overnight trip.

Take the Ngatoro Track from the car park below the North Egmont Visitor Centre. Turn left at the Maketawa Track junction. The track rises and falls over two ridges and two streams, passing through goblin forest before reaching the halfway point, Maketawa Hut. From the hut the track rises up to the Translator Road. Turn right to return to North Egmont.

Tahurangi Round Trip (3 – 4 hr return)
Scenic tramp, on a clear day views can be had both up to the summit and down across the Taranaki Ring Plain to the coast. The upper part of this route is very exposed and not recommended for winter use unless you are equipped with an ice axe and crampons.

Follow the Summit Track from the left of the Camp house in the upper car park at North Egmont. The wide track climbs steadily through subalpine forest up the Puffer to the alpine environment. The privately owned Tahurangi Lodge is about the halfway point of the tramp and a great spot for a picnic, with views out over the ring plain. The track continues past the lodge and turns right onto the Around the Mountain Circuit (AMC) before passing under Humphries Castle – the remnants of an ancient layered lava flow. Turn right at the next junction and follow the track down past the Ambury Memorial to return to the Camp house car park.

Holly Hut track (6 hr return)
This is a good day tramp – or a great introduction to an overnight tramp. The upper part of this route is very exposed and not recommended for winter use unless you are equipped with an ice axe and crampons.

Take the Holly Hut Track to the left of the Camp house in the upper car park at North Egmont. The track climbs steadily, passing the Ambury Memorial, before turning right onto the Upper Around the Mountain Circuit (AMC From here the track passes under the Ambury Bluff and over the Boomerang Slip (caution needed) before arriving at Holly Hut. Walk back along the same route to return to the car park.
