Around the Mountain Circuit

Location
While tramps can be accessed from several road ends in Egmont National Park, both circuits traditionally begin at North Egmont Roadend approximately a 30 min drive from New Plymouth. Drive south on State Highway 3 to Egmont Village and turn right onto Egmont Road. North Egmont is at the end of this road.
Description

Egmont National Park can be found on the western coast of New Zealand's North Island. Here the volcano Taranaki (or Mt Egmont as it is also known) rules supreme.

The Around the Mountain Circuit (AMC) has both an upper and lower track. The traditional high level route is a very scenic tramp with spectacular alpine scenery and the best views of Mt Taranaki. This track is best attempted in summer, as during bad weather it can be extremely dangerous. The lower track is almost entirely through bush and less scenic than the higher level AMC, but is much safer in bad weather. Both tracks are traditionally walked anti clockwise.
