Botanical Garden

Location
Ample parking is available around the top entrance, off Napier Terrace. In addition, a small car park, which also contains provision for disabled parking, is available at the lower Spencer Road entrance.
Description

In 1855, the government surveyor Alfred Domett recommended that 7.3 hectares (18 acres) be set aside for Botanical Gardens and 1.8 hectares (4.5 acres) for a cemetery. The garden has a duck pond, an aviary for 'free-flying' budgerigars and a concrete fountain.

Other historical features of the Gardens include the Military Track alongside the cemetery, the building site of the old sexton's cottage, the disused military well and pre-European Maori middens.

Old Napier Cemetery
Napier's original cemetery is located on the top of the spur beside the Military Track. Many interesting stories can be gleaned from a study of the headstones.

Military Track
During the occupation of the hilltop barracks the regimental supplies were carried up from the junction of Chaucer Road south and Spenser Road via the track which runs between the Botanical Gardens and the Old Napier Cemetery. This 'Military Track' had easier grades than either the Chaucer Road or Spencer Road routes. There are good views down into the gardens from the 'Military Track'.
