Kennedy Park Rose Garden

Location
Roadside parking is available along the Russell Road frontage.
Description

The site of 3 acres was purchased in 1937 for a 'Municipal Camping Ground'. The first accommodation was in the form of tram bodies from the Napier Tramway System, which was abandoned following the 1931 earthquake. The park was further extended in 1942 to its present size.

The rose garden was planted and opened in 1951. Many more roses were planted over the following years and the collection now contains approximately 5,000 individual roses comprising of over 500 named varieties, ranging over bush, standards, weeping, climbing and prostrate rose forms. A prominent feature is the 90 metre long display of climbing roses. The rose display is usually at its peak around mid-November, though there are blooms to be seen from October through to April.

The large Eucalyptus trees are all that remains of the original trees surrounding the Kennedy homestead.
